Why Take Plein Air Painting: Winter Landscapes
Join internationally recognized, award-winning artist Mark Mehaffey for a two-day intensive workshop on painting the dramatic winter landscapes on the campus of Interlochen Center for the Arts. You will have opportunities to paint within various indoor facilities with breathtaking views of the outdoors. With the stillness of the lakes reflecting the winter sun and the hearty northern pines and surrounding woods, you will have the perfect backdrop for developing your painting skills in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Open to all skill levels, the workshop will provide a crash course on the fundamentals of color mixing, composition, and basic techniques. You will then apply your knowledge and hone your powers of observation as you capture the beauty of the natural landscape at this special time of the year.
You may bring either gouache, watercolors, and/or acrylic paints. A suggested supply list can be found below.

Plein Air Painting: Winter Landscapes Materials List:
This is a two day winter Plein Air painting class. Media includes: Acrylic, Gouache and Watercolor. In the event that temperatures are BELOW 30 degrees this will be a studio class using photo references. In addition to the following painting supplies please bring 6-8 photographs of WINTER subjects that you might wish to use. If the temperature is 30 degrees or above we will be painting outside. PLEASE bring clothes that will allow you to be outdoors in cold temperatures for up to three hours.
Suggested Paints:
Acrylic: Cadmium Yellow Light and Deep, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light, Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Anthraquinone Blue, plus Titanium White.
Watercolor: Hansa Yellow Light, Gamboge, Alizarin Crimson, Pyrrol Red or Winsor Red, Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue Ultramarine Blue and Indigo.
Gouache: Same as above plus white.
Painting Panels/Paper:
Watercolor/Gouache- Two or three watercolor blocks 8x10 or 9x12 cold press or rough. Mark Mehaffey uses Arches paper.
Acrylic- I suggest inexpensive painting panels. I use Davince dual sided panels and Blick canvas panels. Many companies sell the equivalent, check Cheap Joes Art Supply, Dick Blick or Jerry’s Artorama. I use the 6x8, 8x10 and 9x12 sizes. Please bring at least eight (8) panels.
Please also bring:
Your cell phone and or camera. If you sit to paint bring a light weight folding stool. Please bring your sketchbook with a 5/6b pencil and, if you can, a white water soluble pencil by Stibillo. Also, please bring a roll of masking tape.
A light weight Plein Air easel will be provided for each participant (we have 9), however if you have a plein Air set up PLEASE BRING IT. The instructor uses a light weight camera tripod for SLIK (8000) and a universal aluminum easel from Cheap Joes Art Stuff. A shelf from En Plein Air Pro that attaches to the tripod and a collapsable water container complete the set up.
EVERYTHING, Tripod, easel, paints, brushes, water, water container, paper towels, shelf and painting panel ALL fit in a Kelty backpack. If you bring it, you will carry it.
