Portrait Drawing Program

Why Take the Portrait Drawing Program

Explore the fulfilling world of portrait drawing and hone your observational skills as an artist in this three-day, hands-on workshop with world-class artist-educator Alec Zemper.

Portrait drawing provides a rich window into humanity and a tremendously meaningful way to express yourself creatively. Open to all skill levels, this workshop will teach you techniques for how to accurately and skillfully draw the human face. You'll learn to perceive subtle nuances in facial features through observation and by developing a deeper understanding of light, shadow, and shape.

With expert guidance, you’ll learn how to create block-ins from both reference models and photographs, as a starting point for capturing the angles and placement of key elements in your drawing. You'll then learn how to properly find the edges and contours of shadow shapes of the face and tips for drawing accurately to bring your portrait to life. By the end of this workshop, you'll have created several portrait sketches and strengthened the connection between what you see and how you represent it on paper.

If you are new to portrait drawing, consider taking Interlochen Online's four-week Introduction to Portrait Drawing course to help prepare for the workshop.
