Playwriting Intensive
Explore the exciting intersection of the written word and live-action performance. Our intensive will guide you to the top of your writing game as you compose and perfect a new one-act play. Engage audiences and touch minds as you master the genre’s conventions … and learn how to break them.
What You'll Learn
In our one-week program, you’ll join other high school playwrights in learning to see the theatre as a living, breathing, collaborative art form. All students will apply with a one-act play and receive actionable critiques on their work during the intensive.
As a student at Interlochen's creative writing summer camp, you will:
- Receive one-on-one feedback from your instructor on your play
- Workshop your play with your peers
- Attend craft lectures
- Craft an individualized plan for completing your manuscript
- Complete writing exercises to sharpen your technique
- Participate in an all-class reading and performance of your work at the end of the session

The Writing House
During the one-week session, your artistic home will be The Writing House. This comfortable space provides quiet work areas, ample seating for group projects, and a literary publications room with computer and printing stations. Take a 360-degree virtual tour.
Reading
Our students celebrate the end of the week with a reading from their one act hosted right on our gorgeous campus.
Additional Opportunities
In addition to our one-week intensives, we also offer our multi-week Creative Writing camp program for high school students. Extend your stay on our beautiful campus, continue writing your novel, and push yourself outside your "genre comfort zone."
Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers a Creative Writing major, as well as a post-graduate year.
