Nancy Stagnitta with Ya-Ju Chuang

Experience Interlochen’s gifted faculty, students, and guests in Traverse City as the Interlochen in Town Series comes to The Alluvion. This performance features Interlochen Instructor of Flute Nancy Stagnitta and Collaborative Pianist Ya-Ju Chuang. 

Praised for her "brilliance and beauty of tone," (Baltimore Sun), Powell Artist Nancy Stagnitta’s versatility as both a classical and jazz flutist has led to concert engagements in Africa, Europe, Asia, and across the U.S.  She gave the Asian premier of David Amram's "Giants of the Night" Flute Concerto with the China National Symphony in Beijing, and recently served on the jury for the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.  She has appeared as a guest artist at Sir James Galway’s International Festival, performed with Grammy Award winner Billy Childs, and served as U.S.I.A. Artistic Ambassador to Africa, where she presented concerts and masterclasses in Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique and Namibia.  Her album with Grammy Award winner Bob James, “In the Chapel in the Moonlight,” has garnered acclaim across musical genres.  She has also been featured on the Voice of America Broadcast Network and American Public Media's Performance Today.

Stagnitta currently serves as principal flutist with the Traverse Symphony and Great Lakes Chamber Orchestras, and is the former piccoloist with the Baltimore and Sarasota Opera Orchestras.  She earned her degrees from the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, where she received the Ashworth Prize. Her teachers include Robert Willoughby and Timothy Day.

Chuang is an active performer, appearing around the world as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist. As a performer, Chuang has received top prizes in numerous prestigious competitions, including the Brussels Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition, the American Protégé International Competition, and the National Taiwan Piano Competition. Chuang has worked as a collaborative pianist at the Music Teachers National Association East Central Division and National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions. As a pedagogue, she has presented at the MMTA State Conference, the MTNA Collegiate Chapter Piano Pedagogy Symposium, and MTNA Conference. She is a graduate of Michigan State University, Kent State University, and the University of Taipei.
