Tuba at Arts Academy
Why Study Tuba at Interlochen
As a tuba player, you are the heart of the ensemble. We'll help you create a solid foundation of sound that empowers the rest of the ensemble to soar. Discover the tuba's potential and understand why it's a vital part of the music world.
What You'll Learn
Our boarding school for tuba, Interlochen Arts Academy, is the destination for young tuba players. We want to see you shine both as an individual musician and as an ensemble member. With our classes, you’ll be able to reach your potential in both.
Our combination of studio classes and private lessons will give you the individual attention you need to soar. You’ll learn music theory, musicianship, fundamental basics, and performance skills with our dedicated instructors. You’ll also understand the importance of daily practice and develop the discipline you need to build on your talent.
Guest Artists
Throughout the year, you'll have the opportunity to work with acclaimed artists in master classes, workshops, and rehearsals. Past guests have included:
-
Carol Jantsch, Principal Tuba, Philadelphia Orchestra
-
Gene Pokorny, Chicago Symphony Orchestra
-
Seraph Brass, all-female brass quintet
-
Richard White, Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University
Finding 'my own thing'
As principal tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carol Jantsch first discovered the euphonium as a young camper at Interlochen Arts Camp. More than two decades later, Jantsch’s curiosity evolved into a thriving career as a professional musician. Listen in as Jantsch reflects on her formative experiences at Interlochen Arts Camp and Interlochen Arts Academy and offers advice for prospective students.
