Percussion Intensive
Why Take Percussion Intensive
Percussion instruments come in all shapes and sizes. But regardless of their technique or country of origin, their purpose is the same: creating rhythm and texture in musical works. In this one-week summer camp program, you will hone your rhythmic skills and master a variety of instruments, preparing you for advanced percussion study.
What You'll Learn
During your week here, you will engage in an intensive schedule of classes and rehearsals designed to prepare you for further study of percussion in high school and beyond. You'll participate in advanced workshops on a variety of instruments, honing your skills as a well-rounded percussion performer.
Instruments covered in the program include:
- Marimba
- Timpani
- World percussion
- Drum set
- Orchestral percussion
You'll also enjoy daily master classes with our acclaimed faculty and guests and explore challenging repertoire in percussion ensembles. At the end of the session, you will present a public performance.
Program Highlights
Percussion Ensemble
Each day, you will join your peers for Percussion Ensemble rehearsals. The Percussion Ensemble performs a challenging repertoire that highlights many of the diverse instruments of the percussion family. Percussion Ensemble rehearsals offer the opportunity to practice the instruments and techniques you have studied in class.
Master Classes
During the intensive, master classes are a daily occurrence. Led by our faculty and guest artists, these classes provide professional perspectives on standard percussion repertoire—and offer you the chance to work one-on-one with these acclaimed artists.
Faculty Recitals
Listening to music is an important part of studying it. That's why our faculty present several solo and chamber recitals during the intensive. On nights when the percussion faculty isn't performing, you're welcome to attend recitals by the faculty of any other institute—for free!
Additional Opportunities
If you'd like to continue your studies at Interlochen, we also offer a six-week summer Orchestra & Wind Ensemble program. Interlochen is also home to Interlochen Arts Academy, a college preparatory boarding high school that offers six music majors for students in grades 9-12.
