Interlochen alumni nominated for 2024 Tony Awards

Ten alumni received nominations across eight award categories for ‘Stereophonic,’ ‘Prayer for the French Republic,’ ‘Water for Elephants,’ and other acclaimed productions.

The 2023 Tony Award

Update: Interlochen Arts Camp alumnus Richard Winkler (IAC/NMC 58-63, 65) earned two 2024 Tony Awards as a producer for Best Revival of a Musical winner Merrily We Roll Along and Best Play winner Stereophonic (both as part of Winkler & Smalberg). Alumna Sarah Pidgeon (IAC 05, 07-12; IAA 12-14) starred as Diana in the award-winning Stereophonic.

Ten Interlochen Arts Camp and Arts Academy alumni are among the nominees for the 2024 Tony Awards.

Presented annually by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, the Tony Awards honor excellence in Broadway theatre. Since their founding in 1947, the Tony Awards have been considered one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry. Nominees are selected by a committee of 40 independent theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee.

Seven alumni received nominations in individual award categories:

  • Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre
    • Adam Guettel (IAC/NMC 80), Days of Wine and Roses
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play
    • Betsy Aidem (IAC/NMC 73), Prayer for the French Republic
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play
    • Celia Keenan-Bolger (AS 93-95), Mother Play
    • Sarah Pidgeon (IAC 05, 07-12; IAA 12-14), Stereophonic
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical
    • Steven Skybell (IAC/NMC 76-80), Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club
  • Best Choreography
    • Shana Carroll (IAC/NMC 87), Water for Elephants (with Jesse Robb)
  • Best Orchestration
    • Tom Kitt (IAC 90), Hell’s Kitchen (with Adam Blackstone)

Alumna Kristin Caskey (IAC/NMC 85-86) served as a producer for the Best Revival of a Musical-nominated production of Gutenberg! The Musical! Richard Winkler (IAC/NMC 58-63, 65) produced Best Play nominee Stereophonic (as part of Winkler & Smalberg) and Best Revival of a Musical nominees Merrily We Roll Along (as part of Winkler & Smalberg) and The Who’s Tommy. Christina Wallace (IAA 99-01), a partner of Nothing Ventured Productions, co-produced Best Musical nominees Suffs and Water for Elephants and Best Revival of a Musical nominee Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.

The 77th Tony Awards will be presented during a live awards ceremony at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on Sunday, June 16 at 8 p.m. ET. The ceremony, which will be hosted by Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network and will be available to stream on Paramount+.

Interlochen alumni frequently receive commendations in the nation’s most prestigious arts awards programs. To date, Interlochen alumni have earned 152 Grammy Awards, 32 Tony Awards, 26 Emmy Awards, and four Academy Awards, as well as Pulitzer and Avery Fisher prizes and MacArthur Fellowships.
