Interlochen Online student wins Oxford Flash Fiction New Voice Prize
Yossi Eun-Chong Rosen, 15, competed against writers of all ages from around the world.
Arts Camp alum and current Interlochen Online student Yossi Eun-Chong Rosen (IAC 23, IO 22-24) has been awarded the Oxford Flash Fiction New Voice Prize. Rosen, who is from Bethesda, Maryland, studied creative fiction and poetry at Interlochen Arts Camp and now takes creative writing lessons with Megan Baxter through Interlochen Online.
Founded in Oxford in 2021 as a community interest company, the Oxford Flash Fiction Prize is an international competition dedicated to discovering greatness in flash fiction from around the world. As a New Voice winner, Rosen received £200 and his story, “Eomma, where are we going?” has been made available on the contest’s website. Judges praised Rosen’s “beautiful cadence and flow” as well as the story’s sensitive use of a child’s perspective.
"Getting my work accepted by this amazing prize is a huge vote of confidence for me and I hope I can inspire other young authors to keep putting their work out there," said Rosen.
“I've been working with Yossi for two years now and am always inspired by his creativity! Yossi came to our lessons hoping to learn more about fiction and how to turn ideas into stories on the page,” says Baxter. “Yossi is motivated to write well and reads deeply across world literature. His broad interests and sharp insights into contemporary issues are clear in much of Yossi's work, including this winning short story. Yossi has never hesitated to embody challenging characters and emotional scenes. His commitment to excellence allows him to distill wild ideas into beautiful prose. I continue to be impressed by Yossi's distinct voice, and I am excited to celebrate what I know will be his first success in a long, artistic career.”
