About Abigail
Abigail Chapman currently teaches biology at Interlochen Arts Academy. She brings many years of science education experience to the Academy, and is excited to share her zest for science & natural curiosity with her students.
Chapman began her teaching career in 2013. Her life-long love of nature and curiosity for how things worked led her to pursue science at the collegiate level. Chapman enjoys sharing her passion with students, not only just content, but a real-world applicable scientific literacy that will serve them as they move through the world post-graduation. She firmly believes that science is an inherently artistic endeavor; although it may not seem like it at first, to do good science you must be curious and highly creative! The best scientists have the ability to look at things differently and ask novel questions.
Chapman is a born-and-raised Michigander, and enjoys living in the beautiful natural setting that is northern Michigan. She spends her time outside of the classroom enjoying the outdoors with her family. She is always on the lookout for new things to discover, which leads her to new opportunities. In 2017, she was selected to join a team of educators for a mastodon excavation in southeastern Michigan. She worked closely with paleontologists from the University of Michigan, and the team was able to recover one of the most complete mastodon specimens in years. In addition to scientific pursuits, Chapman also enjoys music in a recreational capacity. She plays flute with local community groups and also enjoys playing her piano at home.
Chapman joyfully encourages students to step into discomfort, embrace critical thinking, and become more scientifically confident with her courses here at the Academy.
I encourage students to look at things differently, explore many possibilities, and think critically. Science is a creative endeavor, and becoming confident in thinking this way will help students as they move through the world.
