About Cassandra
Cassandra Anouthay currently teaches English at Interlochen Arts Academy and College Essay Writing with Interlochen Online.
Before joining Interlochen, she taught English at Benzie Central High School and Harbor Lights Middle School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Aquinas College with a minor in Bilingual Spanish, which was a combination of studies in English as a Language and Spanish. In her time at Aquinas, Anouthay organized and contributed to the Sampler, an annual publication showcasing Aquinas students' writing and visual art. One of her poems went on to receive an Academy of American Poets Prize. Since then, a couple of her poems have been published in Michigan's Best Emerging Poets anthologies.
Anouthay loves sharing and encouraging this love for reading and writing with her students every day.
Reading is not just a skill to be learned but a means of educating ourselves on the diverse experiences of others. As a result, it fosters understanding and empathy. This sometimes requires reading texts that challenge us and make us question what we know. It is important for me to create an open-minded classroom environment where students feel safe to share their perspectives and inquiries.
