About Louie
Louie Hehman is a Kentucky-born pianist and educator who specializes in both jazz and classical styles. He earned his D.M.A. at the University of South Carolina and is currently assistant professor of music at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. He has presented at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP); the MTNA National Conference; and the Kentucky, Indiana, and South Carolina Music Teachers Association state conferences. An active adjudicator, Hehman served as the 2019 Chair of the Young Jury for the Arthur Frasier International Piano Competition and has also adjudicated for the Louisville Orchestra's Young Artist Competition. Former students have been accepted to study at the South Carolina and Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, the Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS), and advanced graduate study at the University of Louisville. He has served as president of the Greater Louisville Music Teachers Association (GLMTA).
In 2018, Hehman spent a summer studying in Vienna under acclaimed Schubert interpreter Hafez Babashahi; in the same year, he participated in the South Carolina premiere of Leonard Bernstein's MASS. Important teachers have included Charles Fugo, Kate Boyd, Meme Tunnell, and Bert Ligon; pedagogy mentors have included Sara Ernst, Scott Price, and Karen Thickstun. Hehman is a two-time recipient of the Steinway and Sons Top Teacher Award, and in 2021 he was awarded a gold medal in the Grand Metropolitan International Music Competition. In spring 2024, he released his debut solo EP, Daydreams, which has been featured on 90.5 WUOL and other classical music stations.
All students, regardless of age or level, have something unique to communicate through music. My goal as a teacher is to help everyone reach their fullest communicative potential by helping to grow their knowledge, determination, and self-confidence.
