Matt Salvo
About Matt
Matt Salvo comes to Interlochen from Viterbo University, where he was a Music Director and Vocal Coach, and has also worked at Interlochen Arts Camp since 2019. He has a depth of freelance experience as a music director, pit musician, and rock keyboardist around Wisconsin and Chicago. Music direction credits include Bat Boy (Viterbo University), Shout! (Paul Bunyan Playhouse), All Shook Up (Paul Bunyan Playhouse), Next to Normal (LCT) Company (Devonshire Playhouse), Follies (Devonshire Playhouse), Winnie the Pooh (Citadel Theatre), Shrek (Windy City Performs), Oliver! (Windy City Performs), Iconic, a Cabaret (Oil Lamp Theatre), and many more. Notably, he won Best Music Direction in the 2020 Chicago Music Theatre Festival for his work on Wonder Woman, a new musical. His years of work as a coach and accompanist inform his music directing style, believing strongly that rehearsal is a conversation, that vocal health cannot be pushed aside, and that even on closing night there is something to improve. His favorite shows to work on to date have been Bat Boy, Maury Yeston's Titanic, and Little Shop of Horrors. Salvo graduated from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse with degrees in Piano Performance and Music Theory.
I encourage my students to look beyond the notes and words to see the intent behind them, and allow that to guide their choices as an actor and a musician.
