Michael Spencer Phillips
About Michael
Michael Spencer Phillips, a graduate of the University of Michigan, has had a 20 year career as a professional dancer in New York City with RIOULT Dance NY, Robert Battle, Merce Cunningham, and Bill T. Jones. As choreographer, he has created original works for dance companies, conservatories, and educational institutions around the globe. Inspired by his choreographic mentors, his work is athletic, musical, and visually stunning—grounded and informed by his training in the Martha Graham technique and Classical Ballet.
As Mr. Phillips continues to reinvent himself as a creative force, he has added the hat of Art/Movement/Creative Director to his professional repertoire. His deep disciplinary expertise in dance—understanding composition through physicality, and emotion through movement and body language—has fostered a lively cross-pollination between choreography and fashion. These collaborations have included shoots, campaigns, and films where he strives to achieve concepts and visuals that have not been seen in print or media before.
Phillips’ work is increasingly interdisciplinary, and recent collaborations have included installation artists, designers, composers, poets, actors, and musicians.
