Michelle 'Mikky' Davey
About Michelle
After completing her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Mathematics Education, Michelle Davey worked as the program director for The Little River School House field trip program. She was also active in the Diversity and Inclusion program. Davey began her teaching career with Interlochen in 2016.
Since beginning with the Academy, Davey has designed and piloted an introductory Computer Science class focused on collaboration, creativity, and general knowledge.
Davey is interested in using technology to improve students' classroom experience. Examples of this include designing a Geometry project using 3D modeling software and 3D printers. Programming and building digital activities to help students visualize mathematics and attending educational technology conferences and professional development opportunities. She attempts to encourage her students' interest in computer science through video game design projects and a 3D printing club.
Growing up Davey had a nomadic lifestyle, living and working in the national forests across the country. Her primary and secondary school experience was a mixture of hands-on business work and independent exploration. These experiences mean Davey has a unique perspective on both mathematics and education. This perspective makes Davey distinctly qualified to help our artistic students find new ways to approach mathematics.
I believe students don't truly hate math, they hate feeling confused, intimidated, and embarrassed by math. To make students into problem-solvers, they first have to learn how to make mistakes.
