About Sarah
Sarah Merwin has been teaching mathematics at Interlochen Arts Academy since 2009 and has taught high school math for the last 18 years. She currently teaches Algebra 2 and AP Statistics at the Academy.
Before entering education, Sarah worked in the business world in finance, marketing, and logistics, and also coordinated a management trainee program. In her work with new management trainees, she ran across far too many people coming out of college that firmly believed they were not "a math person," or they "could not write." Rarely did a new hire claim they could do neither. All of them could do math to a high level and were able to write well...after some work. After 15 years of witnessing this troubling phenomenon, Sarah moved into the education world to see what could be done.
I do not believe that we are born with an ability (or inability) to learn certain subjects. There is no such thing as a "math person." Everyone can learn math to a high level. A learning mind works the best when safe, nourished, challenged, and empowered. My role is to provide this environment as well as to make learning interactive and meaningful.
