Recordings and Reviews

  • Passages, SoundSet Recordings, Sept. 2016
    • Fanfare Magazine reviews (2017):
      • “Stephen Mattingly is a fine guitarist. He possesses a robust sound, but with no lack of sensitivity and imagination. He is a notable colorist, finding just the right tonal quality for each composition. Clearly Mattingly is an artist of taste and conviction. Mattingly gives… a virtuoso performance, filled with expression and an underlying angst. Stephen Mattingly is an artist to his fingertips.” – Dave Saemann
      • “ With no offense intended to Segovia or Bream fans, I find Mattingly’s performance of the [Suite Compostelana] every bit equal to his legendary predecessors. Stephen Mattingly is unquestionably a highly gifted guitarist, quite possibly one of the top four or five players on the scene today.” – Jerry Dubins
    • Sześć Strun Świat Magazine review (2017): “ I have listened to other recordings of the Suite Compostelana, of course including the historic recording of Andrés Segovia, every modern interpretation must compete with this recording…What are my conclusions? Mattingly doesn’t lose this challenge.” – Krzysztof Nieborak

    • “[Tantalus Quartet is] breaking new ground in terms of their aesthetic. The angst is back…they're fun like driving around too fast on a borrowed Ducati. Think LAGQ on steroids (when steroids had a good connotation).” — Andrew Hull, Rosewood Review
    • "strong, nuanced, and textured performance with compelling dynamics and a beautiful sound” —Julia Crowe, Classical Guitar
  • A Chipola Family Christmas, Dec. 2007 — Collaborative ensemble member
