Why Take Plein Air Painting: Fall Sceneries
Learn to paint the vivid colors of northern Michigan's fall in this two-day workshop on the beautiful campus of Interlochen Center for the Arts.
With gorgeous lake views surrounded by the rich colors of fall foliage, you will have the perfect backdrop for developing your painting skills in a welcoming, supportive environment, while experiencing the serenity of practicing your art in nature.
Open to all skill levels, the workshop will provide a crash course on the fundamentals of color mixing, composition, and basic techniques. You will then apply your knowledge and hone your powers of observation as you capture the beauty of the natural landscape at this special time of the year.
After working “en plein air,” participants will be invited back into the studio to discuss and fine tune their works. A suggested supply list can be found below.

Plein Air Painting: Fall Sceneries Supply List:
This is a three-day Plein Air painting workshop. Media includes oil or acrylic. If temperatures are BELOW 45 degrees this will be a studio class using photo references. In addition to the following painting supplies, please bring 6-8 photographs of SPRING subjects that you might wish to use. If the temperature is 45 degrees or above we will be painting outside. PLEASE bring clothes that will allow you to be outdoors in cold temperatures for up to three hours.
Suggested Paints:
Oil or Acrylic: Cadmium Yellow Hue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Hue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Dioxazine Purple, Magenta, plus Titanium White.
Painting Panels/Paper:
Canvases or Canvas Panels: smaller sizes work well, 8x10, 9x12 sizes. Please bring at least eight (8) canvases or panels.
Other Supplies:
Burnt Sienna acrylic paint, 4 oz. tube, palette knife, palette and or palette paper, linseed oil, brushes, paper towels, waste bag, brush washing supplies.
Please also bring:
Your cell phone and or camera. If you sit to paint bring a light weight folding stool. Your sketchbook with a 4/6b pencil and kneaded eraser. A lightweight Plein Air easel will be provided for each participant (we have 9), however, if you have a Plein Air set up PLEASE BRING IT. The instructor uses a Julian Plein Air Box Easel. EVERYTHING, Tripod, easel, paints, brushes, water, water container, paper towels, shelf and painting panels and canvases, sun umbrella, sun hat. If you bring it, you will carry it.
