For most students, attending a boarding school is an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in a new environment, make lifelong friends, and pursue their passions. But getting used to life away from home isn’t always easy—especially for students who haven’t been away for extended periods of time before. Fortunately, Interlochen Arts Academy has a strong support system to help students who are missing their families. Here are some tips from Interlochen’s Residence Life staff members to help students who are struggling with homesickness.

Get involved and build connections

One of the best ways to overcome homesickness is to dive into the vibrant student life at your boarding school. Join clubs, organizations, or sports teams that align with your interests. Take a Zumba class, try rock climbing, or perform slam poetry for the first time. Immersing yourself in activities you're passionate about can help shift your focus away from missing home and toward building meaningful connections with your new community. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new—you might just discover a hidden talent or a new hobby.

Make an effort to form friendships with your peers and surround yourself with a supportive social circle. There’s no need to do anything complicated—you can keep it as casual as getting a meal together in the dining hall or taking time to explore the campus grounds. Before long, you’ll start building friendships that will last, and creating the memories that will make your boarding school experience an incredibly special part of your life.

Call home (but don’t overdo it)

While you’re settling in at boarding school, stay connected with home by maintaining open communication with your family. It can be helpful to share both the positive and challenging experiences you're having at boarding school. If you only focus on the negative aspects, it can cause unnecessary worry for your loved ones. And if you only highlight the positive, they may not be able to provide the support you need during difficult moments. Being honest about the full range of what you’re experiencing is usually a good approach.

Regular check-ins with your family can help you process your emotions and provide you with the consistent love and encouragement you need to thrive. However, be mindful not to overdo it, especially if you start feeling like you’re “missing out” on life at home. Support from your family can be incredibly valuable, but make sure you’re still finding time to immerse yourself in your new environment and develop the independence you need to succeed.

Prioritize self-care

Homesickness can negatively impact your mental and physical well-being, so make sure to prioritize self-care so you can manage these emotions more effectively. Start by nourishing your body with a balanced diet and staying hydrated. Keep a stash of your favorite snacks or beverages from home in your dorm room—familiar tastes can provide a sense of comfort when you're feeling down.

Exercise is another essential component of self-care. Whether you join a sports team, visit the gym, or simply take a leisurely stroll around campus, physical activity can boost your mood and help you destress. It also helps to establish a consistent sleep routine and ensure you're getting enough rest, since fatigue can exacerbate difficult emotions.

Create a supportive living environment

Your living space plays a significant role in your overall well-being. Keep your dorm room organized and personalized with things that remind you of home, like photos, artwork, and other mementos. A tidy and familiar environment can provide a sense of stability and comfort when you’re feeling homesick.

Establish a daily routine that incorporates time for studying, socializing, and relaxation. A structured schedule can help you feel grounded and provide a sense of normalcy in your new surroundings. When you need a break, try a calming activity like journaling, reading, or listening to music to help you unwind and refocus.

Get professional support

Remember, you’re not alone in your struggles with homesickness. Don't hesitate to reach out to trusted adults on campus like the Residence Life staff. These individuals are trained to provide emotional support and can offer valuable coping strategies tailored to your needs.

Additionally, Interlochen Arts Academy has school counselors available for scheduled appointments or walk-in sessions. The Counseling team can also help students and families find outside resources for long–term mental health support.

How families can support their students

Homesickness can be challenging for families as well. To help your student through this transition, try to stay in touch with them throughout the school year. The encouragement, understanding, and sense of home that you offer can be a difference-maker for your student. At the same time, be mindful of their need for independence. Schedule regular check-in times when you can both talk freely, but try not to call constantly or at unexpected times.

Be mindful of timing sensitive conversations; try to keep check-ins positive right before bedtime, as negative emotions can be amplified in the evening. For an extra-special surprise, consider sending a care package with familiar items or comforting treats from home. This can provide your student with a much-needed boost during difficult moments.

Remember, homesickness is a natural and temporary part of the boarding school experience. With time, patience, and the right coping strategies, your student can overcome these feelings and fully embrace the incredible opportunities that await them—even while they stay connected to their support network at home. Getting involved on campus, making self-care a priority, creating a supportive living environment, and seeking professional support are all keys to making the transition to boarding school as smooth as possible.
