Pianist Kevin Cole (IAC/NMC 72, IAA 76-77), widely regarded as the foremost interpreter of George Gershwin’s compositions, first came to Interlochen’s National Music Camp as an Intermediate camper. Even at that age, he had already discovered his love affair with the music of George Gershwin. Returning to Interlochen for his senior year at the Academy, he studied classical piano while continuing to cultivate his passion for Gershwin and the Great American Songbook. He has performed with over 100 orchestras worldwide, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall, National Symphony at Kennedy Center, and Albany Symphony at Carnegie Hall. He is also an award-winning musical director, arranger, composer, vocalist, archivist, and producer, with multiple recordings as a solo artist and in collaboration with others. A Steinway Artist, Kevin returned to Interlochen to perform with the Arts Academy Orchestra at the Gershwin Gala in 2023.

Upon arriving at Interlochen I was so ready to be surrounded by people passionate about their art. At first I thought I was competing to fit in and just turning into a ball of technique. But I made a point of letting ALL the arts here influence my passion at the piano. That unlocked something in me. Interlochen showed me it’s not about perfection. It’s about connection.
