Where Are They Now: Shireen Hinckley

Shireen Hinckley (IAC 08, IAA 08-10) picked up a camera and started making films at age 12. After one of her documentaries won her a scholarship to Interlochen Arts Camp, she applied to the Academy without telling her parents–and got in! She credits Interlochen with preparing her for her film career in two ways. The solid foundation in the basics of film allowed her to tackle more advanced projects as an undergraduate at University of Southern California, which caught the attention of her instructors and led to opportunities with other professionals. Even more importantly, Interlochen taught her the value of collaboration.

Now as a post production supervisor and editor for Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment, Shireen is doing what she loves–working with a creative team to tell narrative stories, including the films Renaissance and Black is King. She also continues to collaborate with fellow Interlochen film alumna Anna Dobos (IAA 08-10) through Somewhere Films, the production company they founded.

Interlochen taught me how to look at life creatively and recognize what you can do with very little. A couple of people and a camera is all you need to make beautiful content. The gear might make things easier, but it can also limit you. All you need is imagination and the right people around you.
