Arts Academy students set to tour with Yo-Yo Ma
In March 2026, Interlochen Arts Academy students will go on tour and perform with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, performing with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma in select cities. Students will debut an original piece composed by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, and multiple arts areas will collaborate in an original multidisciplinary piece.

2023 - MUKTI
131 Interlochen Arts Academy students traveled to New York City to perform the world premiere of “MUKTI: A Movement of Liberation” at David Geffen Hall. During the weeklong tour, students performed side-by-side with musicians from the New York Philharmonic and explored the city’s vibrant arts and culture ecosystem.


2020 - Miami ONE
Academy students from all seven majors toured Miami, Florida to present an interdisciplinary performance titled “One” at the New World Center. The tour also included excursions in the city and opportunities to learn from New World Symphony fellows.


2019 - RESOLVE
Interlochen Arts Academy students from six majors traveled to New York City for two groundbreaking interdisciplinary performances called "RESOLVE." Academy alumnus and Drama Desk Award-nominated actor Sydney James Harcourt collaborated with the students during the performance’s development and joined them on stage at National Sawdust.


2016 - Young Americans (New York Phil Biennial)
In celebration of the New York Philharmonic’s biennial, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra performed works by young American composers—including several world premieres and New York premieres—at David Geffen Hall in New York City.

WORK WITH TOP PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS
Pianist Lang Lang, soprano Renée Fleming, and trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will headline Interlochen’s Shirley Young Distinguished Artist Series at Interlochen Arts Camp.

Lang Lang
During his residency, which will take place during the final week of Interlochen Arts Camp 2025, Lang Lang will host a master class for Arts Camp piano students, rehearse with Interlochen’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO), and perform George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with WYSO at a special orchestra concert on Saturday, Aug. 2. Cristian Măcelaru, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Music Director Designate of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Interlochen Arts Camp and Academy will conduct the performance. The Aug. 2 concert will also feature selections from noted John Williams’ film scores performed by the Interlochen Philharmonic and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. Măcelaru and Louis Langrée, Conductor Emeritus of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Director of the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique in Paris, will conduct both ensembles.

Renée Fleming
The series will continue in summer 2026 with a performance and residency by Grammy Award-winning soprano and actress Renée Fleming. Renowned as one of the most acclaimed singers of our time, Fleming will lead master classes for the Interlochen Arts Camp choir and opera students and stage a performance of her acclaimed concert program Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene with students from the Camp’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra and Interlochen Philharmonic on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026. Memphis Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Moody will conduct. In addition to her musical activities, Fleming will lead a Music and the Mind symposium featuring a panel of mental health experts on Friday, Aug. 7, 2026.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will serve as the Distinguished Artist Series’ summer 2027 guests. Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will be in residence at Interlochen Arts Camp from July 14-18, 2027. While in residence, Marsalis and the Orchestra will present a public concert and rehearse with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra in preparation for a side-by-side performance under the baton of Cristian Măcelaru and featuring one of Marsalis’ compositions on Sunday, July 18, 2027. The musicians will also work with students in the Camp’s Jazz program; additional details about their involvement with jazz students will be announced later.

COLLABORATE WITH ALL ARTS AREAS
Edmonia
In the spring of 2024, Interlochen Arts Academy students from multiple disciplines presented the staged premiere of the opera Edmonia by award-winning composer William Banfield. The opera, which was originally commissioned by Pulitzer- and Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, celebrates Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907), the acclaimed African American and Native American 19th-century sculptor.
