Comics & Graphic Narratives Intensive


Find your own origin story as a comics and graphic narrative artist at Interlochen this summer. During this energizing week, you'll explore the visual and narrative possibilities of one of today's most exciting genres as you inspire, create, and polish your unique storytelling abilities.

What You'll Learn

This program is open to artists with a range of experiences and backgrounds in either visual arts, graphic narratives, or creative writing. During this one-week program, you'll have the opportunity to develop skills at the intersection of both art and storytelling alongside other student practitioners and under the guidance of industry professionals.

As a Comics & Graphic Narratives student, you will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of graphic novels, graphic memoirs, comic books, limited panel comics, and web comics
  • Experiment with the use of sequencing, closure, and iconography in graphic narratives
  • Explore various treatments of temporality in constructing narratives 
  • Work in manual and digital storytelling components 
  • Workshop and critique student work at the end of the session

Program Highlights

Dow Center for the Visual Arts 

During your intensive, your artistic home will be the Dow Center for the Visual Arts, one of the nation's finest facilities dedicated to the study of the visual arts at the high school level. Inside the 36,000 square-foot complex you'll find separate studios for drawing, painting, metalworking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, digital arts, and fibers, as well as a gallery for student, staff, and faculty exhibitions.

Presentation

Students will participate in a reading and showcase in The Writing House Great Room on the last day of the program.

If you want to deepen your understanding of the visual arts, you can attend a three-week program in Visual Arts, Advanced Drawing, Advanced Painting, or Fashion.

If you're interested in exploring writing further, we have additional Camp program opportunities for young writers, including our one-week Novel Writing and Screenwriting intensives, and our three-week Creative Writing program.

Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers a creative writing major and a visual arts major as well as a post-graduate year.
